Our Spring 2015 concert was performed on Sunday May 17, 2015 at 3:00 pm, at Centenary Methodist Church at 309 New St., in historic downtown New Bern. Maestro Philip Evancho, conducting. Admission was free.
The featured solo work is the Vivaldi Concerto for Four Violins in B Minor RV 580. Soloists for the Vivaldi concerto are Rachel Pino, Andrea Tolmich, Holly Gutierrez, and Jennifer Miller.
Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) trained for the priesthood at S Geminiano and S Giovanni in Oleo..
‘Il prete rosso’ (‘the red priest’), so named for his trademark red hair, composed RV 580 circa 1711.
The May 17 NBCS program also includes Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, the Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, Bartok’s Rumanian Dances, the Theme from Schindler’s List, "If I Were a Rich Man" (arr. by Rachel Pino and featuring maestro Evancho as the baritone soloist). We’ll be joined by Ann Courtney and Lauren Smith on flute/piccolo, Sandy Ralston on bassoon, Jodi Elbing on clarinet, Chris Mele on French horn, Pat and Katie Dougherty, trumpets, and Cheryl Kite on keyboard. Admission is free. Don’t miss it.

Our Fall 2014 concert will be on Sunday November 2, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Centenary Methodist Church, 309 New St., in historic downtown New Bern. Concert features guest conductor Philip Evancho, with soloist Elizabeth Ivy in the Beethoven Romance in G Major.

Maestro Philip Evancho has been the director for nearly
thirty years of the Craven Community Chorus. Those who have had the pleasure of
working with Philip Evancho know that he is a truly wonderful performer, a
highly respected teacher, and an inspiring director. Philip Evancho
received a degree in music education from Baldwin-Wallace College. He spent
five years as a music teacher in Ohio public schools, and at the age of 27,
added a master of music in vocal performance from the University of Akron. He
continued his studies for two years at the prestigious Boston Conservatory. He
has performed with the Boston Concert Opera, Boston Lyric Opera and the Opera
Company of Boston. In 1981, Evancho moved to North Carolina to join the
National Opera Company in Raleigh as a bass-baritone. He came to New Bern and
Craven Community College as part of the Visiting Artist Program in the
mid-1980’s, at which time the college music program was established. He has
been a steady force behind the Craven Community Chorus and the CCC Encore!
Chorus, semi-retiring only last year.

Guest soloist Elizabeth Ivy has appeared internationally as soloist, chamber
and orchestral musician. She has performed at a variety of venues
including Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Severance Hall ,Seully Hall,
Wright Auditorium and Fletcher Hall. Her life long passion for the
violin started at the age of 4 and has led Ms. Ivy to collaborate with
internationally acclaimed artists Christoph von Dohnanyi, Elliot Fisk,
the Cavani Quartet, Jahja Ling and Ludovic Morlot. As an orchestral
musician Ms. Ivy performed with the Brockton, Huntsville, New Bedford,
New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory and Atlantic Symphony
orchestras, as well as the Plymouth Philharmonic, and has toured with
international symphony Philharmonia of the Nations. She received her
Bachelor of Music in 2009 from the New England Conservatory of Music
where she studied with Lucy Stoltzman and Marylou Speaker Churchill.
She supplemented her studies with teachers Jodi Levitz, Jennifer Culp,
Terry King, Gregory Fulkerson, Nicholas Kitchen, James Buswell, Nancy
Zeltzman, and Ara Gregorian. Prior to her studies at the New England
Consrvatory Ms. Ivy studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where
she completed her preparatory studies, and the Boston Conservatory of
Music. Ms. Ivy recently moved to Greenville, North Carolina where she
is an active freelance musician and performs with The Long Bay Symphony
in South Carolina. She performs locally in New Bern, NC with the Trent
River Chamber Players and supplements her performances with a private
violin studio, including students in New Bern and Greenville, NC.
Currently, Ms. Ivy teaches Suzuki violin classes grades 4th through 12th
at both Snow Hill Greene County Schools and St. Peter's Catholic School
in Greenville, NC.

Concertmistress Rachel Harmatuk Pino has taught and
performed internationally and across the United States for over 13
years.
Rachel is Principal 2nd Violinist for the Long Bay Symphony
Orchestra, Executive Director of Trent River Chamber Players, and
Concertmaster of New Bern Civic Strings. She has appeared as Principal
2nd Violin in the Amman Symphony Orchestra (Jordan), Fayetteville
Symphony Orchestra, Opera Carolina, and has performed with the Carolina
Master Chorale, Crystal Coast Choral Society, Greenville Choral Society,
Carolina Chamber Music Festival, Pawley's Island Music Festival,
RiverTowne Repertory Players, New Bern Civic Theater, and Ratio Theatre,
and Cape Fear Regional Theater.Rachel has taught at the NC Suzuki Institute at East Carolina
University, the STAHR Workshop (VA), the Greenville Suzuki Association's
Suzuki Saturdays, and as an adjunct professor at Craven Community
College. She has presented educational concerts at the National
Conservatory (Jordan), and in Myrtle Beach (SC), Norfolk (VA),
Fayetteville (NC), and in local schools throughout Eastern NC. She is
registered with both Long-Term and Short-Term training in Every Child
Can! and Suzuki Violin Volumes 1-10 from Teacher Trainers Joanne Bath,
Joanne Martin, Enid Cleary, James Hutchins, and Vera McCoy-Sulentic.
Rachel is a Suzuki Violin student from the age of 5 and studied with
Andrea Smith and Joanne Bath. As a young student she studied at the UNC
School of the Arts (1999), the NC Governor's School, won her division of
the NC Music Teacher’s National Association Competition (2000), and
graduated from New Bern High School (2001). She went on to study with
Lucy Chapmann at The Boston Conservatory (2005) and received two Masters
degrees from East Carolina University (2007) in Suzuki Pedagogy (with
Joanne Bath) and Violin Performance.

Kimberly graduated from Appalachian State University with a Master’s of Music in Cello Performance. She has been the featured soloist with the Salem College Orchestra, in master classes for Steven Doane, for ASU’s Graduate School Commencement Ceremony and in solo recitals. She has performed with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and the Appalachian Repertory Orchestra and has been principal cellist for the Elon University Chamber Orchestra, the Salem College Chamber Orchestra, Appalachian Musical Theatre, Appalachian Opera Orchestra, Appalachian Philharmonia, and the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra. Kimberly currently teaches middle and high school Orchestra for Onslow County Schools and privately to students from Jacksonville to New Bern.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Holly Gutierrez started on the violin at age 10. Later discovering her passion for viola, Holly holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance on Viola, with a minor on Violin, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) where she studied with Stanley Chepaitis and was mentored by Raul Faure. Holly has played with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Altoona Symphony Orchestra, IUP Faculty Quartet, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Alleghenies, and has worked with musicians and conductors across the United States and Canada such as Lorin Maazel, Andrés Cárdenas, Istvan Jaray, and Scott Laird. Holly lives in New Bern with her husband and son, performing regularly with the Crystal Coast String Quartet and teaching viola/violin privately.
